Message from a sick man

Published: 30 July, 2010

• AS I held my corner of the “Save Finsbury Health Centre” banner outside NHS Islington offices this morning, a young man stopped to tell me he was too ill to join the demonstration, but wanted to help save the health centre.

This is something the people with the public budgets show no sign of being able to achieve on their own.

Now that Islington has invested in a Fairness Commission especially to promote equality in the borough, there should be a priority in enabling people like that young man to be part of successful efforts to refurbish Finsbury Health Centre.

Defeatism is bad for public health.

Let’s ask: “What do we need to do to achieve the refurbishment of a pioneering health facility so it becomes a beacon of good health practice in the 21st century?” and turn this into an opportunity for health professionals, politicians and the public to work together to get what we want.
