Sainsbury’s supporter

Published: 25 June, 2010

• I’M glad that the new Labour administration has decided to continue the council’s Shop Local campaign, which started under the Liberal Democrats.

The campaign has given a real boost to Islington shops and businesses struggling during the recession.

I was, however, surprised by Labour councillor Paul Convery recently urging all councillors to pledge to shop local “by doing their shopping at Sainsbury’s or Morrison’s”.

He seems to have a very different idea from the rest of us about what constitutes supporting a small, independent, local business – and why shopping in one of the “big four” supermarkets would help the local economy.

Cllr Convery was keen enough to add his voice to those who are against more supermarkets in the borough only a couple of months ago.

To start his career on the council’s executive by suggesting that shopping in them shows local leadership is bizarre.
