Long-term legacy of bullying managers

Published: 20 April, 2012

• UNISON is not at all surprised by the findings of the Town Hall review (Black and ethnic minority workers’ discrimination claims revealed in review, April 13).

For many years trade unions have highlighted the way BME staff are discriminated against.

While unions welcome staff forums, the only way of tackling discrimination is through the union movement and Unison’s self-organised groups.

Nor are we surprised that staff with disabilities are targeted by bullying managers.

Staff with a hidden disability are often marginalised and sometimes treated with contempt.

In times of austerity it is sometimes all too easy for managers to believe they will get results by bullying staff.

Bullying may in the minds of some people produce short-term results but in the long term it damages the person being bullied, the bully and ultimately the organisation they serve.
