Where the blame lies

Published: 27 April, 2012

• I MUST ask that you correct the misleading impression that the scheme for a new Scout HQ was scuppered by planners (Anger as £2.5m Scout HQ is scuppered, April 20).

The council’s professional planners recommended the scheme for approval, but it was the councillors who refused the scheme.

From my interpretation, the refusal was on a very narrow interpretation of planning policy and could well result in an unnecessary and costly appeal.

This is a price that as an Islington resident I am unwilling to pay. Planning is about delivering benefits to communities.

A decision by our elected representatives not to deliver 34 homes and a community facility funded for the long term is a failure to deliver a benefit to the people of Islington.
