Let’s harness canal power

Published: 3 August, 2012

• AS I walk along the canal most days I observe that there are areas that have a constant flow of water at a fair pace.

Why don’t the canal authorities put in a hydro electric-type dam that would generate electricity at zero cost?

This power could then be used to light up areas that need brightening up in winter and, as it is green power, maybe even traffic lights for cyclists.

Also, I see there are people who use their boats for business, be it hairdressing, selling books or coffee.

As much as I applaud this type of business enterprise, which generates character and brings life to the canal, I hope it does not
encourage others to exploit the canal.

We could end up seeing Kentucky Fried Chicken and Starbucks moving in.

This would spoil an area which for many years has been defended so gallantly by so few and, hey, it ain’t fair on the swans either.
