Slap on a trolley tax

Published: 20 July, 2012

• HERE’S an idea: if the council wants to raise funds, why doesn’t it charge Sainsbury’s in Liverpool Road for every trolley removed from its premises and dumped elsewhere?

The store’s security, coupled with its attitude towards doling out plastic bags, makes it the most un-eco-friendly supermarket in the borough.

I live in Lambeth but work in Islington and there seems to be a big problem with people taking trolleys from supermarkets around here - especially Sainsbury's - and then dumping them.

The Manager of Sainsbury's in Liverpool road was quoted as saying he had "budgetary restraints" when asked why they didn't fit some kind of locking device to prevent people taking the trolleys but that doesn't make sense as they must lose so many of them every year. That and the nuisance and mess and the cost to taxpayers (how many get dumped in the canal?) is shameful.

Tesco is far better on this one.
