Dogs need protecting

Published: 8 June, 2012

• MOST of the dogs kept by irresponsible owners are crossbreeds (£240,000 drive against dog poo smells like an expensive stunt, May 25).

They are “status” dogs which people want as a fashion accessory, a weapon or for breeding because there is easy money in it. These dogs are not kept as companions and are usually abused and exploited.

In one instance, a dog warden was called on numerous occasions when dogs were being kept in a garden.

As yet nothing has been done about it.

The owner went on to breed them and now puppies are kept in the same situation.

The council could employ people to check houses and flats to find out if dogs are neutered or have had pups or are being abused.

If owners are irresponsible then they should be banned from keeping animals.

There should be a ban on pet shops selling animals when so many are already in need of a good home or are being put down because there is no space in sanctuaries. Laws protecting animals need to be enhanced.
