Green’s past as a dump

Published: 25 May, 2012

• I HAVE been working for some time on a book on the history of Islington Green, as the first of a series on Islington’s “greens”.  But I’m blowed if I’ll call the book Islington Memorial Green.

Islington Council now wants to record for historical appropriateness that it held a war memorial on the site for under 100 years.

Islington Green actually started life in the early middle ages as a rubbish dump. It remained so for many centuries. If it is now so keen on historical accuracy shouldn’t it more appropriately re-name it after its ancient origin?
