• SOME things are beyond parody, some folks do it for themselves. Councillor Paul Smith’s stage-strutting, tin-pot dictator act manages both (New storm over decision to re-name Green, May 11).
While the transformation from the “We’re on the side of residents” mantra to “I’m the executive member responsible... it’s going to happen” speaks for itself, Cllr Smith’s contempt for corporate director Kevin O’Leary and his constitutional role is inexcusable – and revealing, betraying as it does his view of “staff” members of the council.
Not content with wanting to re-write history by renaming Islington Green against popular will, the executive member not only demonstrates his ignorance of constitutional procedure but further insults residents by trying to redefine a “consultation”.

• ISLINGTON Green is the heart of old Islington. The name should not be hijacked for memorial or any other purposes.
Let’s have a local referendum on the proposed name change.
If the councillors want to avoid the cost and probable lack of support as a result of wide democratic consultation, then leave the name alone.
