Letter to the Editor
• ON Saturday, the historic Holborn and St Pancras Labour Party banner had an outing at The Wave demonstration, calling for action on climate change.
Young and old, we marched from Grosvenor Square to Parliament Square, and it was good to have the freedom of the streets along that usually busy route.
Ed Miliband was marching along with the crowds, with his child in a pushchair, and we wish him the very best in Copenhagen. There is no more important task than to make a lasting deal to stabilise global warming, and Ed has already shown a real willingness to listen, through “Ed’s pledge”, through his ministerial phone-in on Saturday morning, and by being present like the rest of us on this important march.
We are proud that the Labour Party has taken on the Red Green Revolution.
Back in 1989, when green concerns first hit the headlines, the Labour Party frankly did not have a clue about green issues, with a few notable exceptions.
But the shock of climate change has brought the party to its senses, and, as someone put it last week, “we’re all green now” with the “red” of social justice and fairness mixed right in.
Frank Dobson MP has seen at first hand the dangers of climate change for Bangladesh, one of the countries most vulnerable to rising sea levels. It was no accident that nearly half our group of marchers last Saturday were of Bangladeshi origin.
