MORE than 3,000 bikes have been stolen from Islington streets and estates in the last two years, according to figures released by the Metropolitan Police.
Prosecution rates for bike theft remain low, with only one person in court for every 40 bikes stolen across London.
Islington Lib Dem community safety spokesman Councillor Rhodri Jamieson-Ball said: “Thirty bikes a week are stolen in Islington. This could just be the tip of the iceberg. Many thefts go unreported because people don’t believe anyone will be caught.
“It’s time for some common sense action to tackle this latest crime epidemic.”
