Published: 29 June, 2012

A SUFFRAGETTE who used martial arts to defend herself against arrest by police is to be honoured with a People’s Plaque tomorrow (Saturday).

Edith Garrud (1872-1971), one of the western world’s first female professional martial arts instructors, ran a jiu-jitsu school in Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park, with her husband William.

The plaque’s unveiling at 1pm at Thornhill Square, Angel, will be attended by members of her family.
