TWO schools have united to create a giant mosaic of stars, planets and the four elements: earth, wind, fire and water.
Year 8 students from Highbury Grove secondary school and Year 5 pupils from Gillespie Primary School collaborated on the first of what is to be a series of joint projects between the two art departments.
“It’s quite unusual for primary and secondary schools to do anything together,” said Amy Hobson, Gillespie School art co-ordinator, “they are often very much separate entities.”
This initiative is the brainchild of both Ms Hobson and Kat Gold, head of Art, Design and Technology at Highbury Grove School.
The students built 24 separate pieces in seven weeks including a three-metre-long mosaic of the school motto “Per Ardua Ad Astra” that translates as “Through Hard Work to the Stars”. They will be hung in the main hallway of Highbury Grove school this week.
