DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg dropped into the New North Academy in Popham Road, St Peter’s, last week to see how his government’s Pupil Premium initiative was getting along.

The scheme gives £600 for each pupil on free school meals to help raise achievement.

New North, which converted to academy status last year, is using the money to provide sports sessions during lunch breaks, pupil counselling and one-to-one tuition for children who are learning English.

Mr Clegg, who was joined by Children’s Minister Sarah Teather, attended a Year 4 and 5 science lesson where he learned about condensation and the water cycle.
