Playing Heathcliff is one of those roles you bet all male actors would like to do – it may not be Hamlet, but it’s up there alongside Darcy, surely?
This latest adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Yorkshire Dales saga of the well-to-do family who take in a Scouse street kid and then watch him grow into a strapping, red-blooded young man, has James Howson in the Heathcliff role.
And he revels in it. He helps make this nothing like the usual airy-fairy costume drama.
A runwaway slave, he finds contentment in the hill farm up in the Dales, falls for Cathy and then watches her farmed out to marry the well-heeled Edgar Linton (James Northcote).
Kaya Scodelario stars as Cathy and her whimsical pouting is a little grating. But never mind, director Andrea Arnold has worked her usual magic on this well-trodden tale.
