A FUNDRAISER for mental health charities at the Vortex jazz venue in Dalston on Sunday features this year’s joint winners of the Angela Carrington Award – actress Sarah Niles and singer Yuko Yukoi – together with runners-up and nominees.

Sarah Niles is best known as Reba Parkinson in the BBC TV series Beautiful People, while Yuko Yukoi came to this country from Japan 12 years ago and has been a regular performer around London since then.

Other singers at the awards were runner-up Shella Blake and nominee Kath Best.

Musician and songwriter Angela Carrington took her own life in 2005 while suffering from clinical depression.

One of the few things that helped her was singing jazz at Open Mic events and the awards named in her memory seek to find the best Open Mic jazz singer in greater London, raising money for mental health charities in the process.
